ENER-G played an important role in ensuring that The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games was a green sporting spectacular.

ENER-G’s Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems are powering 3 of the 14 Commonwealth venues, providing highly efficient on-site electricity and heat.

The green energy technology is reducing the carbon footprint of the three venues by a total of 1547 tonnes per year, which equates to the environmental benefit of removing 516 cars from the road or the carbon dioxide offset by 1268 acres of forest.

The newest ENER-G CHP unit, a 150kW system, has been powering Commonwealth swimming venue Glasgow’s Tollcross International Swimming Centre since May 2013. A similar 150kW system was switched on in 2004 at Scotstoun Sports Campus, venue for the squash and table tennis matches. During the past ten years it has reduced the elite sports centre’s carbon footprint by 4004 tonnes, equivalent to the environmental benefit of removing 1335 cars from the road.

Elite diving venue - Edinburgh’s Royal Commonwealth Pool - heats its one billion gallons of water with a 230kW ENER-G CHP unit. The green energy generation system also powers the category A building, which was officially listed by Historic Scotland in March 1996.

Combined heat and power – the simultaneous generation of electricity and useful heat - is almost twice as efficient as conventional power generation as the majority of heat is recovered and used on site, rather than wasted into the atmosphere. In addition, transmission losses are avoided. CHP achieves cost savings of up to 40% over electricity sourced from the grid and heat generated by on-site boilers. It can yield a return on investment within 3 to 5 years - providing impressive cost savings over a typical 15 years+ product lifecycle. In leisure developments, where there is often a large heating/cooling demand, CHP can provide the best energy saving solution for operators. 

In such instances, especially where the heating or cooling demand is for extended periods, the cost and carbon saving benefits of cogeneration are difficult to match. The technology also scores in terms of versatility - since it is suitable for new and refurbished buildings, as a replacement for ageing boiler plant, or in augmenting existing or new boilers. In addition, CHP systems can be configured to provide off-grid resilience to keep the lights on in the event of a ‘blackout’.
The tax saving benefits of CHP add to its attraction, including reduction or exemption from the Climate Change Levy; qualification for Enhanced Capital Allowances; preferential treatment in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme; exemption from business rates and exemption from the proposed Carbon Price Support Levy.
